Morning Board: Reds Across the Screen

Gold is pulling back slightly today, trading at $4,010.00 per troy oz (-0.96%), while silver faces heavier selling pressure at $53.51 per troy oz (-2.49%). The move has nudged the gold/silver ratio to 74.9, reflecting silver's typical high-beta behavior during broad market pullbacks.

PGMs are also under pressure across the board: platinum is off -3.77% to $1,510.00 per troy oz, and palladium has declined -3.10% to $1,037.00 per troy oz.

Macro Backdrop: Yields and Sovereign Debt

Precious metals are navigating a challenging short-term macroeconomic mix. The US Dollar Index sits at 102.20 [4], keeping a slight cap on dollar-denominated commodities, while the 10-year US Treasury yield hovering at 4.99% [3] maintains upward pressure on real interest rates, increasing the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion.

However, structural tailwinds remain firmly intact. With US CPI inflation running at 3.7% year-over-year [2], real hard assets continue to attract capital seeking inflation protection. Furthermore, total US public debt has reached $40.46 trillion [1], an unprecedented fiscal load that reinforces the long-term monetary case for gold and silver as unencumbered sovereign hedge assets.

Field Note: The Touchstone

Long before modern assay methods or spectrometer scans existed, ancient merchants verified gold purity using a simple piece of dark, fine-grained stone known as a touchstone. By dragging a gold sample across the stone, the assayer created a visible streak. They would then apply nitric acid to the mark; because gold resists acid while base metals dissolve, the remaining color revealed the alloy’s precise purity. This ancient trade practice is why we still use the word "touchstone" today to describe any standard by which genuine value is judged.
